I am a licensed mental health counselor. My goal is to support clients with their mental health as well as stress management, relationship issues, and finding the appropriate services. Therapy does not have to solely be for people in crisis. Being proactive with your mental health and attending therapy can have long-lasting benefits. My first goal when starting with a client is building rapport. In order for therapy to be effective, there needs to be a mutual trust between the client and therapist. I primarily use a cognitive behavioral and person centered approach to therapy. Although every session typically includes “talk therapy,” I also try to use a variety of interventions. I also have a therapy dog in my office who loves to cuddle on the couch with patients.
James Verdery is a Licensed Mental Health Counselor located in Acton, MA. James works with children, adolescents, teenagers, and adults who struggle to manage their emotions and feel in control of their lives. His clients find themselves overwhelmed by feelings of anger, inadequacy, frustration, confusion, sadness, or loneliness. Despite their best efforts, they feel like they aren’t in control of their lives. They might suffer from low self-esteem, which leads to anxiety at school or in peer groups and can often leads to isolation. James helps these clients to grow their understanding of themselves, their emotions and learn techniques to manage their distress. Clients learn tangible skills in emotional regulation and expression. They practice challenging assumptions, ignoring self-judgments, distraction and grounding exercises, and more. James tailors his treatment style to each client’s individual needs, personalities, and preferences for engaging, effective sessions. James earned a Master’s degree in Clinical Psychology. He is passionate about starting conversations about mental health at an early age. He strives to give clients the skills they need for a lifetime of healthy habits, including strong coping skills that allow individuals to feel meaning and joy in their lives.
My strength as a psychologist is to deeply attend to each client's emotions, thoughts, and life context. If you seek to participate in therapy with me, we will work together to create a judgment-free and safe space. In my practice of therapy, I effectively balance exploratory and supportive therapy with the latest research and evidence-based interventions. My advanced training includes a postdoctoral fellowship at McLean Hospital, with a clinical appointment at Harvard Medical School, and an APA-accredited internship at the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. Alongside my private practice, my professional experience includes teaching clinical psychology at the undergraduate, master’s, and doctoral levels. I am happy to answer any questions you may have or set up an initial phone conversation to determine if we both think we might work well together to meet your goals. Deciding to see a therapist requires awareness and regard for oneself. I have deep respect for what has brought you here, and this will form the foundation of our work together. Perhaps you seek therapy now because of a crisis that is presenting new challenges or bringing up old, unresolved problems. Or you now feel ready to address a long-standing pattern that has caused much difficulty and pain over time. Your struggles may be affecting not only your relationships with others but also how you relate to yourself. My job is to help you expand your capacity for what you can do alone. I offer a combination of psychoanalytic and CBT/DBT informed approaches while being mindful of both the universality and cultural individuality of our experiences. I have worked extensively with a range of people, from those in the throes of PTSD or addiction to ones dealing with transitions or looking for greater connection in relationships. I hold the conviction that exploration of the past is necessary as it influences and shapes our circumstances, while at times being present to our anxieties and resources in the moment is crucial. By coming here, you have already begun your work. If you think that I may be of help, let us have a conversation. It would be my privilege to talk with you.

There are times in life when our usual coping strategies and support systems are not enough and it takes courage to seek help during times of pain and uncertainty. Navigating college and graduate school in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic, racial inequities and tension, and the current political climate can certainly be one of these times and you don’t have to navigate it alone. Therapy can provide a safe space for support, learning, and meaningful change. I am a licensed psychologist who specializes in evidence-based treatments for adolescents and young adults who are seeking support to manage mood, anxiety, college mental health, life transitions, grief, motivation, sleep, and family concerns. I also specialize in working with family members or loved ones of individuals who have a diagnosis of serious mental illness, such as schizophrenia or bipolar disorder. I am passionate about working with college and graduate students and have extensive experience and training working within the context of college mental health. My therapeutic style is warm, active, compassionate, and collaborative. I use a strengths-based approach and draw on Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), and other evidence-based approaches to tailor treatment to the specific values, strengths, and goals of my clients. I utilize these approaches to help clients create a toolbox of coping skills and develop a deeper understanding of themselves. Every person has a unique identity, story, and experience, and deserves personalize therapy to fit their identities and strengths. My priority is to create a space where every client feels safe discussing painful thoughts and feelings, and supported as they work toward creating meaningful change in their lives. I applaud you for taking the first step in finding a therapist. I encourage you to reach out to me if you think I may be a good fit for you.
As a Harvard-trained licensed clinical psychologist with over 25 years experience, I often see clients who struggle with managing stress and anxiety, have unsatisfying family and personal relationships, experience health problems or grief and loss, or have trouble focusing in school and work. Change involves both insight and actual changes in one's behavior. My goal is to create a time and place with you where we can work safely to explore the origins of the problems and then make improvements. My approach is warm, supportive, and actively focused on bringing about lasting change. I provide therapy via telehealth. <script src="https://thrivingcampus.com/verified.js?pid=46833"></script>
Psychological suffering exists on different levels and manifests in different ways, in psyche, body, interpersonally, socially, both consciously and unconsciously. Thankfully, there are many ways to address psychological struggle, ranging from working with symptoms that are consciously experienced to the exploration of underlying non-conscious dynamics, many of which originate during the early years of one's life and impact one's relationship with self and others. My work is social justice-informed and incorporates an understanding of how larger socio-political systems impact our lives. Facilitating empowerment is key in my work. I provide a safe space and relationship in which to listen deeply, to your thoughts, feelings, emotions, memories, fantasies, and bodily experience. By learning to listen in new ways, we expand our capacity to hold more, respond with greater flexibility, clarity and ease, develop presence and compassion, and become empowered to make positive changes. I have advanced training in psychodynamic psychotherapy, somatic psychotherapy, mindfulness and Internal Family Systems. I work with adolescents, adults, and couples, and I specialize in a range of issues, including anxiety, depression, complex trauma, issues around individuation, existential questioning, embodiment difficulties, and relationship challenges.
I have a collaborative approach to therapy, using principles of self-compassion, cognitive reframing, identity exploration, and mindfulness throughout my work. In therapy, we will work towards self-awareness, create concrete action steps for emotional, cognitive, and behavioral change, and reduce the power of the internal critic. I have worked for over 9 years in college counseling. I have specialized in trauma-informed care, EMDR, dialectical behavioral therapy, and solution focused therapy. I enjoy working with individuals who identify as BIPOC, LGBQIA+, nonbinary, and first gen. I have also worked closely with the Tufts University Asian American Center, collaborating on programming and training to reduce the stigma associated with accessing mental health support.
You're tired of the way things are. I provide the compassionate, expert support you need to help you to help you reclaim peace and rest. I’m a pediatric psychologist who delivers online specialty therapy to support teens and young adults across MA and RI with sleep problems, anxiety, and chronic medical conditions. I blend cutting-edge, solution-focused approaches with a compassionate and non-judgmental style to collaborate with you on the best ways to help. My approach is flexible and tailored to you and your goals and values. Although I do not accept insurance directly, many students have out-of-network coverage through which they can receive reimbursement from their insurers. Upon request, I can provide “superbills” to help with this process.
